Voluntary Safety Recall: MSR/Cascade Designs Recalls Camping Cooking Pots Due to Burn and Scald Hazards

Public Service Announcement:

For many alpinist and backcountry snow slides, the MSR Reactor stove has been a go-to stove for many years. The Reactor stove unit is a reliable and hot-burning unit best suited for quick boils and melting snow/ice for drinking water.

In the marketplace since 2007, the Reactor has seen few updates—why fix what’s not broken? The enclosed flame design has been adopted throughout the camping stove community. However, the pots used for the Reactor have what some say is a design flaw. The pot handle on some Reactor pots can loosen, causing the hot contents within the pot to spill. Spilling boiling water (100 Celsius, 212 degrees Fahrenheit) is a real hazard not to be taken lightly.

The following Reactor compatible pots have been recalled: “MSR® Trail Lite™ and Reactor® camping cooking pots, sold individually and as part of sets, including Trail Lite cook sets, PocketRocket® cook kits, and Reactor stove systems.”

As part of the recall, MSR is sending users a pot grip.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), “The company has received 22 reports of the pot handle either detaching or becoming loose, including two reports of burn injuries.”
