Crickets. That is the term for silence, for nothing happening, for getting no reply. It is often an awkward silence. What’s going on at THR? Crickets. Crickets aren’t actually quiet. So it’s sort of a weird term. When crickets actually go silent, it is because they’re scared—there is a predator around. So, actually, the saying should be: No crickets.
“Did Jimmy call you back?”
“No, crickets.”
But what the actually rather loud sound crickets make is meant to imply when used in storytelling is silence, stillness, and often anticipation, foreshadowing. So, in our case, crickets is actually apt. It might seem quiet, but we’re busy as crickets over here. That isn’t an actual saying, like it is with beaver. But when crickets are making that noise, they’re definitely trying to get busy. Over the past two months and longer, really, we’ve been rebuilding the website and working on Issue 2 of The High Route journal (and assigning stories for Issue 3, which will also be published this season). About this, we are pleased. The new site is looking slick. And the new issue? The stoke is building as the many pieces coalesce. We have some new authors, photographers, and returning authors. It’s a good mix, and it is coming together most artfully.
We’ll have more info about the new site in roughly a week. Thanks for your patience. We hope your summer is going well, and we look forward to unveiling our summer’s efforts as fall nears.
