Hey readers, supporters, subscribers, and potential subscribers, we are stoked to let you know that Issue 3 of The High Route journal, our late-winter print offering for the 25’-26’ season, has arrived in Bend, Oregon. We’ll be printing labels and shipping issues out in the coming days.
Although this is not an extensive deep dive into the issue, we’ve got some teasers. First, the dreamy cover shot from Matthew Tufts. Some of you may know Tufts through his stories and images—he has an excellent feature in Issue 3 titled Una Mancha Mas: Back to the Future on the Southern Patagonian Icefield. In short, working with Tufts was a gift. And it’s a gift we are excited to share with you. When looking for potential cover images, Tufts sent over about 20.
The composition, the in-the-moment vibe, and our love for snow crystals sealed the deal: the photo of Thor Retzlaff rappelling in a storm captures what Tufts calls “striking art.” We agree.
As usual, we go deep in Issue 3. There’s a part profile, part homage to a mountain by Billy Haas that focuses on the minimalist approach to big mountains (think 8,000-meter peaks) employed by Tiphaine Dupérier and Boris Langenstein on Nanga Parbat. Sophie Stuber, a Chamonix-based journalist, writes about resistance in the mountains in her piece The Alpine Spirit of Solidarity.
There are pithy short essays from Lynne Wolfe and Hadley Hammer. A straight-to-the-point essay by Brody Leven—Ham and Egos—that explores the meaning of a ski-mountaineering descent. From a photo-essay perspective, Sam Hennessey opens the issue while Ben Tibbetts brings us to some of the Alps’ more esoteric huts.
We are grateful to the writers, photographers, and artists who helped bring Issue 3 together.
