I’ve done a lot of standards shopping because of paragliding (who have their own standard, EN966, but have opened up to allow EN1077 due to a lack of EN996 options in the market) and something I’ve wondered about is if maybe we should also consider downhill MTB helmets (ASTM F1592.) The standard is, I think, rigorous and relevant for skiing and some options without the chin bar weigh about the same as popular ski touring helmets. No… still not in the neighborhood of a sirocco but really nothing else is. I’m currently using the multi-rated MTN Lab for skiing, mountaineering, and paragliding (and have been generally happy with it).

What a wormhole this is. I’ll be adding some more info about helmets shortly as it pertains to testing. I know several folks who use the Salomon MTN Lab and find it a good fit for uphilling and descending.
