Lots of deep breaths here at The High Route. Issue 1.0 of The High Route magazine is in the works and available for order. And we have a few new subscription options. Read on.

Attention Please.

Warning…information dump pending.

OK, at ease.

We have a few announcements after taking the latter part of the summer to reboot and re-energize. There is a lot to digest here.

Here are the updates:

The High Route in Print

The High Route magazine is in the works. The magazine will be a print supplement to what we already produce on our site. High quality print, in this case, means a coffee-table book shine, ~125 pages with fine longform storytelling, poetry, and vivid images to round out the offering. As always, we will focus solely on human-powered turns. (We’ll still house our gear reviews on our website.) We’ll have more information on Issue 1.0 in the next few weeks. We are particularly excited about the contributor lineup for Issue 1.0, with stories coming in from Pakistan, the Tetons, and Alaska, with features on modern-day gatekeeping and land-use management on some of the Alp’s prime ski-mountaineering terrain. That’s the teaser.

The High Route magazine will be available to subscribers only, with some availability at select stockists. To read The High Route magazine, you’ll need to subscribe. Our print run will roughly align with the number of subscribers.

For ’24-’25, we are skewing away from quixotic tendencies and keeping it simple with a single-issue release. Issue 1.0, already in the works, will be proofed for final design at the end of November, with delivery to subscribers at the end of January/beginning of February.

For ’25-’26 and onward, The High Route magazine will be biannual with fall and late winter releases. We’ll have more information on this in the spring.

The High Route Website

Our website will continue to focus on what we know—the backcountry and ski alpinism scene. The site will house our gear-related content, news, op-eds, short and longform work, avalanche education, technique tutorials, and podcasts.

This season, we will also offer office hours with some of our contributors. Along with our usual comments section, office hours allow subscribers to ask direct questions and get detailed answers about various topics. And if you are looking for a gear consult, let us know—please reach out and contact us, we are glad to take the time to help out.

While we build out the print side of The High Route, the website will continue with its regular content updates.

It should be smooth sailing if you are new to The High Route: choose your subscription option, create an account, and enter the payment information.
